Radiologic Technology

Radiologic technologists, also known as radiographers, perform medical exams using X-rays on patients to create images of specific parts of the body. They operate specialized imaging equipment to capture two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) images of the body's tissues, organs, bones, and vessels. These professionals work closely with physicians, ensuring that high-quality diagnostic images are produced for interpretation.

Program Overview

A career in radiologic technology can lead in many directions. Radiologic technologists are needed in every healthcare setting. You could work in a large hospital, a suburban outpatient clinic, or a rural physician's office. You could specialize in dozens of clinical areas, from prenatal care to orthopedics. You could manage an entire radiology department, including its budget and personnel. You could teach, inspire new generations of radiologic technologists, or perform research that leads to breakthroughs in diagnostic imaging.

The AAS Radiography Program offers a comprehensive 18-month curriculum that prepares students for their American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registration/certification exam and entry-level radiologic technology positions. Many students begin working as student technologists during their fourth and fifth semesters at hospitals and urgent care centers. 

In addition, the Program offers continuing education to students and registered technologists in the fields of CT, MRI, and Mammography. Please see the Program's advanced modalities post-primary certification page for more information.

Academic Plan

Career Opportunities

Currently, job prospects for radiologic technologists are very promising, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting employment growth due to an aging population that may require more imaging services. The scope of practice for radiologic technologists allows for specialization in various areas such as oncology imaging, mammography, and cardiac interventional technology

As required by the federal regulations outlined in 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), prior to enrollment in courses, applicants for programs that require professional certification or licensure in the State of Missouri are required to acknowledge the professional certification and licensure requirements in the state considered their permanent address.

If a student applies/intends to apply to a program requiring professional licensure, but the Jefferson College program does not meet the certification/licensure requirements in the student’s state of permanent address, the student must complete the attestation form prior to enrollment in courses indicating they plan to work in a state in which the Jefferson College program does meet the educational certification/licensure requirements. Students who do not complete the attestation will not be able to enroll in that program.

Radiologic Technology Program Statement:
The ARRT certifies Radiologic Technologists and is a National Registry. Some states do have specific requirements.  Please see the ASRT website for those states requiring additional qualifications.

Accreditation

The Jefferson College Radiologic Technology Program is an accredited program through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and is a recognized accredited program by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

The program’s current award is Probation. General program accreditation information and the current accreditation award letter can be found online.

The most recent JRCERT accreditation letter was sent on 4/25/2024. The Program was placed on probation. The Committee based this decision on the expiration of the maximum compliance timeframe allowed to document compliance with all accreditation standards. As required by the USDE and consistent with JRCERT Policy 11.400, the program was to have documented compliance with the Standards by July 22, 2024. Consistent with JRCERT Policy 11.400, the JRCERT Board of Directors has granted a 12-month good cause extension to the program’s compliance timeframe. The board recognizes the change in key program personnel (i.e., program leadership) may have affected the program from documenting compliance with all accreditation standards. The program must now be in compliance with all accreditation standards no later than July 22, 2025.  More information on accreditation can be found on the following websites:

The JRCERT assures employers and prospective students that our program provides educational excellence and patient and professional safety. It is the faculty’s desire to create the highest quality Radiologic Technology Program available. If a student has concerns with program policies or practices, please bring them to the attention of the Program Director or the Clinical Coordinator. Issues may be easily resolved once we are aware of them. The Grievance and Appellate Process can be found within the student handbook.

The Radiologic Technology Program is a chartered member of the Missouri Gamma Sigma Chapter of Lambda Nu, a national honor society for radiologic and imaging sciences.

Jefferson College’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available. This report is required by federal law and contains policy statements and crime statistics for Jefferson College. The policy statements address Jefferson College’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, for example, policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses.

Additionally, this report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety, including topics such as: crime prevention, fire safety, Jefferson College Campus Police Department enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, and other matters of importance related to security and safety on campus. Also included are crime statistics for three previous calendar years which were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus.
