Online Professional Development

Jefferson College currently offers three online professional development courses for adjuncts and full-time faculty. These courses focus on instructional pedagogy and techniques to improve teaching in face-to-face, online, and hybrid environments. Additional professional development courses may be developed if interest warrants it. If you have an idea for an online professional development course, please complete this Form

For additional teaching resources, see the Teaching Toolbox page.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES

Faculty interested in taking a Professional Development Course should complete the Request for Enrollment in a Professional Development Course. Associate Dean or Program Director approval must be received before a request can be fulfilled. All courses are conducted online through Canvas, and stipends are awarded for successful course completion as noted below. Each course is expected to take approximately 10 to 15 hours for faculty to complete.

  • JC101: Foundation for Adjunct Instruction

A requirement for all new adjuncts, JC101 is a fully online orientation session that covers College policies, procedures, and resources available to faculty and students. A hands-on orientation to the Canvas learning management system is also a component to the course. At its core, the course is designed to help adjuncts be as successful as possible in their first semester at the college. Three weeks are allotted for completing this course. It is offered five times per year, with a $200 stipend for adjuncts presented upon successful completion of the course. Associate Deans and Program Directors should use this link to register new adjuncts for this course.

  • JC102: Advanced Educational Methods

JC102 is a fully online professional development session that allows faculty to overview several topics pertinent to education such as collaborative learning, open education resources, student behavioral concerns, and administrative policy. Instructors will also focus more deeply on one of these topics through completion of a course project. The course is offered once per semester in four week sessions, and a $200 stipend is awarded to adjuncts upon successful completion.

  • FCC: Faculty Certification Course for Online and Hybrid Teaching

Online courses require teaching techniques that can differ greatly from traditional classroom instruction. Prior to teaching online or hybrid courses, faculty must complete this course. The program equips full-time and adjunct faculty with the basic skills necessary to create a successful online learning environment for students.  This course is offered three or more times per year in four week sessions, with $300 stipends presented to all participants upon successful completion.
