Q: How many schools participate in Jefferson College Area Technical School (ATS)?
A: Eleven high schools in Jefferson County, along with home-schooled students, send students to ATS.

Q: Who decides which students attend ATS?
A: Admissions decisions are made collaboratively by ATS administration, faculty, and the student’s sending high school.

Q: What are the admission criteria?
A: Admission requirements vary by program and are based on career-specific standards. Admissions teams review each student’s grades, attendance, behavior, coursework, and other relevant information.

Q: Can students earn college credit in ATS programs?

Q: How and when will I know if my student has been accepted to ATS?
A: Students will be notified through their school counselor and an acceptance letter from ATS, with most admissions decisions being made in March and April.

Q: What if a program is full?
A: If a program reaches capacity, a student's application will be considered for their second-choice program.

Q: If my child is on a waiting list, how will I be notified if a spot opens?
A: ATS usually notifies the school counselor about any openings. In some cases, ATS may contact students and their families directly, asking for a prompt response to manage the waitlist efficiently.

Q: How many students are in each program?
A: Program enrollment varies depending on the specific program.

Q: How will my child get to ATS?
A: Each sending school provides bus transportation to and from ATS. Students may also drive if they receive permission from both their sending school and ATS.

Q: When should I apply?
A: ATS offers programs for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Students should apply the year before they plan to attend. Applications open on December 1 for each subsequent academic year.

Q: Is there a tuition cost for parents?

A: While transportation is provided to and from ATS, students involved in after-school activities should coordinate with their high school for additional transportation needs, as this may vary by school.

IEP/504 Students Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Student Services Representative?
A: A Student Services Representative acts as a liaison between ATS and partner schools for IEP/504 meetings. They also serve as the special services coordinator at ATS, ensuring that students with IEPs/504 plans receive necessary accommodations and modifications.

Q: How does an IEP work at ATS?
A: A student’s IEP functions at ATS just as it does at their home school, with all accommodations and modifications provided as specified in the IEP. However, certain accommodations may not be feasible in specific ATS programs due to program demands or safety considerations. Any limitations will be discussed on an individual basis to find the best solution for each student.

Q: When do I need to complete the Accessibility Resource Office (ARO) application?
A: The ARO application is required for students with an IEP or 504 plan who are enrolling in a dual credit or college credit ATS program to ensure appropriate accommodations are provided.

Q: Which ATS programs offer dual credit or college credit?
A: Dual credit or college credit options are currently available in the following ATS programs: Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Digital Media, Early Childhood Education (ECE), Fire Science Technology, Emergency Medical Technician, Health Services II, HVAC, Precision Machining Technology, and Welding Technology.
