FAFSA Verification
Jefferson College is required to verify certain information provided by a student/parent (if dependent) on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applications requiring review are flagged by the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, Jefferson College has the authority to select and verify if the FAFSA has incorrect or conflicting information.
Students selected for verification must submit the required documentation in order to determine their financial aid eligibility for federal grants, state grants and federal student loans. Failure to submit required documentation will result in a delay of awarding.
Verification Documents Required
Students selected for verification will receive a tailored letter that details what information and documentation must be submitted via the college’s third-party verification servicer, ProEducation Solutions (ProEd). In addition, students can view any requirements on Financial Aid Self-Service available in their MyJeffco portal. Typically, students must submit:
- A verification worksheet
- IRS tax return transcripts directly from the IRS or use of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool at studentaid.gov
- W2s if student and/or parent worked but did not file
- Additional documents may be requested if conflicting information exists
Students must submit forms and documents electronically through the ProVerifier+ Student Portal.
Student Notification
Students will be notified via email concerning verification requirements. In addition, students will have the ability to view required information for verification in the ProVerifier+ Student Portal. If any missing information or corrections are needed after the original submittal, students will be notified via email and can also view the missing information required in the ProVerifier portal.
Processing time for verification can take up to four weeks. Corrections to FAFSA data will be made by ProEd, and the student will receive an updated Student Aid Report (SAR). Upon completion of verification, students will be notified via mail, along with any award change as a result of an increase or increase to the student’s expected family contribution (EFC). A change in EFC could have an effect on federal/state grant eligibility and student loans.
Verification must be completed prior to the review of any professional judgment reviews for special circumstances.
Deadlines to Submit Verification Documentation
The 2023-2024 verification process must be completed within 120 days of the student’s last date of enrollment in the academic year or before the U.S. Department of Education’s Sept. 21, 2024 deadline for an ISIR receipt, whichever occurs first. Students who do not submit verification will not be awarded federal/state grants or federal student loans.
Fraud Reporting
The college is required to refer to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) any credible information indicating that an applicant for federal aid may have engaged in fraud or other criminal misconduct in connection with an application for federal student aid.
