School of Humanities

The School of Humanities provides a solid foundation of knowledge for most programs at Jefferson College. Humanities studies offers students a well-rounded and in-depth exploration of society and culture through the study of fine arts (including art, music and theatre), communication, TV production and mass media, history and geography, political science, philosophy, foreign languages, and English (including literature studies).

The School of Humanities is the study of who we are as world citizens. At Jefferson College the School of Humanities opens the door to diverse ideas and adventures (both intellectual and practical). It helps us understand and embrace the importance of diversity in cultures and society. By learning through a variety of academic avenues, students come to understand not only themselves, but also others around them and the world. When we understand others, we are able to work with them to create a promising future.

Courses in the School of Humanities range from the fundamentals of communication to studying abroad while exploring topics in music and political science. Our students can focus on the arts or digital media, on history, or on religion and philosophy. They can build a foundational understanding of political science to set themselves up for a career in politics or even learn how to develop skills in broadcast communication and the technology that supports it. Whatever one’s desired path, studying humanities forges the way for one’s mind to develop critical thinking skills, learn to communicate effectively, and develop confidence in communication skills.

An Associate of Arts degree with an emphasis in any field in Humanities will allow a graduate to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a degree in nearly any field of interest. We also offer an Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Art or Music. These degrees are ideal for students who want to focus on one of these areas, whether or not they are considering transferring to a four-year institution. Our Associate of Arts with an emphasis in Media Communications is ideal for those who want to create their own content for TV, radio, or digital media while also learning the technical skills necessary to make their ideas come alive.
