Program Overview
Jefferson College Law Enforcement Academy's ongoing assessment of recruits, law enforcement continuing education, programs, and services assures that it will remain a responsive and progressive law enforcement academy.
Beginning Fall 2024, the Jefferson College Law Enforcement Academy will be located on the Jefferson College Arnold Campus, 1687 Missouri State Road, 63010. The location is convenient to surrounding counties and easy to access from I-55 and State Rt. 21.
Once inside the building, the academy classroom and training rooms allow you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the nuances of your career choice. From in-depth lectures presented by experts in the field to life size simulators and hands on experience. The academy provides you with the knowledge and skills to accept your first assignment with pride and confidence. From the first day of your education, the academy builds on your experience, knowledge, and presence. A lot is expected from our recruits, but that is how you become one of the very best in the field. Your uniform sets you apart from the average student and the sharp, crisp, military lines of your attire and persona says you are a professional.

Uniform Inspection:
Law enforcement is a para-military environment. Recruits immediately realize the academy is not college - this is different. Mandatory uniform wear and classroom inspections to insure proper uniform maintenance and preparation are routine.
During the first week of the academy, the recruit is fit with soft body armor and web-gear, as well as a weighted Glock 9 mm simulated handgun, 9 mm magazines and weighted items to simulate the weight of a typical law officer's uniform equipment and duty belt.

Degree Information
Jefferson College Law Enforcement Academy offers two options for students seeking a MO Department of Public Safety POST Class A License. The Academy goal is to train and prepare individuals to become competent, ethical, and effective law enforcement officers. Jefferson College Law Enforcement Academy provides comprehensive instruction in various aspects of law enforcement, including but not limited to: legal principles, tactical skills, communication and interpersonal skills, ethics and professionalism, cultural competence, diversity training, Physical fitness, and wellness.
Missouri POST requires current licensed peace officers to obtain a minimum of 24 hours of continuing law enforcement education a year to maintain their license. JCLEA - DAY Class
The JCLEA DAY class includes required POST curriculum. Included are specialized certifications in Firearms [Handgun, Shotgun and Patrol Rifle], Defensive Tactics, OC Pepper Spray, Expandable Baton, Taser, CPR & First Responder, Defensive Driver Training, Datamaster Breath Alcohol Analyzer Type III Operator, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, and RADAR/LIDAR operations. The JCLEA DAY class is two college semesters.
Classes meet Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Upon successful completion of the program, recruits earn 41 college credits, 1000 POST training hours and the opportunity to test for a Class "A" POST License.
JCLEA - NIGHT Class
The JCLEA NIGHT class includes required POST curriculum. Included are specialized certifications in Firearms [Handgun, Shotgun and Patrol Rifle], Defensive Tactics, OC Pepper Spray, Taser, Expandable Baton, CPR & First Responder, Datamaster Breath Alcohol Analyzer Type III Operator, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, and RADAR/LIDAR operations.
Classes meet Monday through Thursday, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Upon successful completion of the program, recruits earn 41 college credits, 1000 POST training hours and the opportunity to test for a Class "A" POST License.
Basic Academy Requirements
- Applicants must be 20 years of age at the start of the program. You must be 21 years old to take the State Licensing Exam.
- Applicants must be a US citizen.
- Applicants must apply to Jefferson College and meet College reading placement standards.
- Applicants must submit an application to the Jefferson College Law Enforcement Academy with all required supporting documents.
- Applicants given provisional acceptance must submit to fingerprint testing through the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Academic Plan
The Academic Plan is a semester-by-semester plan for the full-time student. Part-time students should work with an advisor to customize the map to fit individual needs.

Training
Driver Training
During the driver training hours, the recruit is instructed in the limitations and inherent problems involved while driving a vehicle during both routine and emergency operation. State law and agency policies regarding operation of a vehicle under emergency and non-emergency conditions are discussed. The liability issues and inherent physical dangers of emergency and pursuit driving are also covered. The components that provide the foundation for skill development and good driving habits are demonstrated and discussed. Proper vehicle inspections are also outlined
After receiving the classroom instruction, on the driving course , the recruit is instructed in and then be expected to demonstrate the proper methods for controlling a vehicle during evasive maneuvers under emergency and pursuit driving conditions. The recruit will be expected to utilize the braking and steering techniques while operating police vehicles during the day and at night through various hands-on driver training exercises.
Firearms Training:
During the 66+ hours of firearms instructions during the academy, the recruit learns the proper weapon handling skills and tactics utilizing academy owned Glock 9 mm handguns and Remington or Mossberg shotguns. The recruit receives classroom instruction and demonstration before the hours of practical exercise at the Hillsboro Range and the Arnold Gun Club. Firearms exercises include day and night shooting, skeet, stress combat scenarios, and shooting decisions. Minimum qualification course scores of 70.00% for both the handgun and shotgun will be required for the recruit to successfully complete this skill development area.
The recruit also has access to training on the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) machine located at the academy for firearms, defense tactics, and practical application scenarios.
Physical Training:
Upon entry to the academy, the recruit is assessed according to the most commonly recognized entry level standards used by law enforcement agencies upon entry to the academy, and must attain minimum standards prior to graduation. In addition to hours of supervised aerobic and strength building training hours, instructors educate and reinforce the need for peace officers to be in good physical condition in order to perform the physical requirements of the job (running, climbing, carrying, dragging, pushing, etc.), to maintain a professional appearance, to reduce the risk of heart disease and other health problems, to reduce the risk of disability, excessive sick leave and stress, and to enhance the quality and quantity of retirement years.

Jefferson College’s Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available. This report is required by federal law and contains policy statements and crime statistics for Jefferson College. The policy statements address Jefferson College’s policies, procedures, and programs concerning safety and security, for example, policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses.
Additionally, this report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety, including topics such as: crime prevention, fire safety, Jefferson College Campus Police Department enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, and other matters of importance related to security and safety on campus. Also included are crime statistics for three previous calendar years which were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus.
